Zu Beginn der Arbeit ist eine in eine schwarze und eine weiße Hälfte aufgeteilte Fläche zu sehen. Der vom Zuschauer abgewandte Oberkörper des Künstlers kommt ins Bild und wirft sich mit dem Gesicht auf die rechte schwarze Fläche. Er richtet sich auf, bewegt sich aus dem Bild, um sich anschließend mit dem Gesicht voran auf die linke weiße Fläche zu werfen. Dieser Vorgang hinterlässt einen dunklen Gesichtsabdruck auf der weißen Fläche. Diese Prozedur wiederholt sich viele Male, wodurch nach und nach von der schwarzen Seite Farbe abgetragen und auf die weiße Seite übertragen wird. Anfangs ist dabei der Gesichtsabdruck des Künstlers noch deutlich auf der weißen Fläche erkennbar, mit fortschreitender Überlagerung verlieren sich aber die Details der Gesichtszüge und verschwimmen am Ende zu einem schwarzen Oval. Die ursprünglich schwarze Fläche hingegen verliert durch das Abtragen allmählich an Farbdichte und wird grau. At the commencement of the work, a surface can be seen that is separated into one black and one white half. The upper body of the artist, facing away from the viewer, comes into view, throwing itself with its face onto the black surface to the right. The artist straigtens up and moves out of the picture to then throw himself face-first onto the white surface to the left. The process leaves behind a dark faceprint on the white surface. This procedure is repeated many times, resulting little by little in paint being taken from the black side and being transferred to the white side. Initially, the artist’s faceprint is easily recognizable, but with the progressing transfer the details of his facial features are lost, and in the end they blur into a black oval. Due to the paint being taken away, the originally black surface, on the other hand, gradually loses color density and becomes gray. |
